Welcome

Willard Battelle

Willard Battelle arrived in Taunton in 1859.  Born in Dover on January 2, 1822, he was the son of Ralph and Patty (Allen) Battelle.  Originally a grocer in Taunton, he transitioned into a seller of periodicals.   He first appears as a photographer in the 1865 Massachusetts Census.  The 1866 Taunton City Directory lists him in partnership with Alexander Rankin.  This partnership lasted to around 1868, at which point Battelle is listed individually.  He is listed as a photographer until 1872. His pictures during this period appear to be primarily stereoscopic, usually of buildings, under the banner of Taunton Stereoscopic Views.  The 1874 directory has him listed as general agency and picture frames.  From 1876 to 1891 he is listed at his residence at 20 Prospect Street with no occupation provided.  From 1891 to 1897 he is listed as a florist at 20 Prospect Street, and from 1898 to 1907 he is listed as a subscription agent. He died in Medfield, Massachusetts on February 2, 1910.
