Callahan J. McCarthy         

Callahan J. McCarthy was born on June 4, 1888. He was appointed to the Taunton Police Department as a reserve officer on August 20, 1919 and fulltime on April 20, 1926. He retired on January 27, 1953 and died on June 29, 1955.

Callaghan J. McCarthy, 65, retired Taunton policeman, was found dead this morning at his home, 16 Madison Street where he had been living alone since the death of his wife. Examination by Medical Examiner Andrew J. Leddy placed time of death at Tuesday morning police said. Neighbors had reported that they had not seen the retired patrolman about his home the past couple of days. The body was found in bed about 10:30 a.m. by Patrolman Thomas W. Devereaux and John O'Connell of the plainclothes division. Dr. Leddy said McCarthy apparently died in his sleep. McCarthy had been in ill health several months. His death saddened the city and in particular the police department, where he was one of the most popular men to serve with the force.
