A native of Taunton, he was widower of Helen (McKenney) Hyland. He resided at 238 Baylies Street, North Dighton. He was employed at Reed and Barton Corporation prior to joining the force. Upon Captain Hyland's retirement from the police department in 1949 after 20 years' service, he was succeeded by the present chief of police, John A. Bobola. Captain Hyland worked through the ranks to the promotion and was top man on the list of those who took an examination for the rank of captain. During his retirement, he enjoyed carpentry and was an avid reader. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Falmouth and Taunton, the voluntary contributory retirement system, the Taunton Police Relief Association, a communicant of St. Mary's Church, and member of the Holy Name Society. He is survived by a son, Bernard P. Hyland Jr., of North Dighton; four daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Claire) Crosby of Taunton; Mrs. John (Miriam) Lynch of Niantic, CT, Mrs. Arnold (Helen A.) Murphy id Taunton; two sisters, Mother Anna Gertrude, mother superior with the Bishop Cassidy High School, and Anna O'Keefe of Taunton, and eight grandchildren.
