Peter F. Galligan  

This is a photograph of Patrolman Peter F. Galligan near his retirement. Born in Ireland in 1861, Peter Galligan was appointed to the Taunton Police Department in 1901 and served until one week before his death on May 8, 1936.

 

Obituary -  Monday May 08, 1936 Taunton Daily Gazette page 2 Peter Galligan, retired patrolman of the Taunton police department died this morning at his home 91 Summer Street in his 77th year. Patrolman Galligan was retired last Tuesday after serving for 36 years and a regular special for four years previous to his appointment to the force by Mayor Arthur M Alger in 1900. He was born in Ireland and settled in Taunton over 50 years ago. Prior to entering police work he was engaged in the painting business. He was ill just one week. Patrolman Galligan was well know throughout the city. During his long period of service as a protector of property and enforcer of law and order he covered practically every beat in the city. For years he worked at Whittenton, later at the Weir and another time in East Taunton. He has been special officer at City Hall on two different occasions. He was well liked and enjoyed a host of friends. He was a communicant of St. Mary's church and a member of the Holy Name Society of that church; Taunton Council Knights of Columbus, The Taunton Police Relief Association and the Massachusetts Police Mutual Aid Association. Patrolman Galligan leaves two daughters, Mrs. Leon Lincoln and Mrs. James Drumgoole, both of Taunton; and four sons, John H. Galligan of Worcester; Martin J. Galligan, a police officer; Harold H. Galligan, principal of Hopewell grammar school, and Christopher V. Galligan of this city. Four grandchildren also survive.
