Taunton Police Department, Massachusetts

Francis L. Dow  

This is a photograph of Francis L. Dow.  Born in Taunton on October 10, 1839, Dow served in Company F, 4th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War.    First appointed to the police department in 1874, Dow would serve with the department until 1903.  He died on May 13, 1913.  

In 1880 he was appointed first assistant Marshal and Captain of the Day Police.  By 1887 he was the City Marshal, before being returned to a police officer in 1890, eventaully being appointed as Captain of Police.
